Ecological Education

The course pertains to ecological and environmental education in its broad sense, in both formal and non-formal sectors. Classes present the theoretical view (environmental problems, educational legislation in Poland, attitudes to the environment, the green movement) and develop practical skills (research methodology in ecological education planning, the construction and evaluation of educational programmes).

Environmental Protection Policy

The course is dedicated to the mechanisms and instruments of environmental policy-making by state institutions, the public, and non-governmental organisations. Lectures present the conceptual attitudes of environmental policy and its specific aspects with regard to biodiversity and climate, whereas discussion sessions involve critical conversations about examples of natural resource exploitation.

Social and economic aspects of nature conservation

The course concerns interdisciplinary issues, outlining the basis of legislation for public participation in nature protection, the chances of occurrence and the methods to cope with human-nature conflicts, as well as general nature management. The course is largely practical.

Economic fundamentals of environmental protection

Main goal of the lecture is providing the background for economic and ecological knowledge related to the activities toward protection of the natural environment and its sources. The lecture will cover: i) fundamentals of ecology and analysis of the links between economy and environment, ii) rules on economic efficiency in exploitation of natural resources, iii) practical problems at realizing politics focused on environmental protection. Particular attention will be devoted to the common for economic politics and protection of environment. Their fulfillment and improvement of efficiency results in cost reduction and increase of satisfaction.

Methods of secondary data analysis on society and environment

Classes in English, illustrating the use of public data to analyse social and environmental problems. On this course, students find out about various sources of secondary data and learn how to properly use them to describe selected problems.

Research funding and conducting research projects

The course is addressed to PhD students of the Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences. It concerns the funding of research and educational activities of PhD students. It focuses on the application process, with all classes showing how and to which institutions one can apply for research projects, how to perform the projects, report them and account for them.

Decision-making mechanisms in protection of the environment

The course is a compendium of knowledge on the methods of decision-making. Introduces formalized methods used for decision making in conflict situations, ie those that involve multiple parties with conflicting interests (eg. The local community, the interests of environmental protection, cultural heritage, tourism, business groups, politicians etc.).
